Happy 100th Birthday Bill Shankly

The Asian Kop would like to pay a special tribute to Bill Shankly, on the day he would have turned 100 years old.

William “Bill” Shankly was born in the village of Glenbuck, Scotland on September 2nd 1913.

As a player, Shanks spent one season at Carlisle United before spending the rest of his career at Preston North End, where he won the FA Cup in 1938. Following service in the Royal Air Royal during the 2nd World War, Shankly managed Carlisle United, Grimsby Town, Workington and Huddersfield Town before taking up the Liverpool job.

In December of 1959, Shankly was appointed manager of LFC, who were languishing in the old second division.

From the creation of the boot room, to improving the facilitates at Melwood, Shanks went about creating a successful dynasty that continued well into 1980’s.

His legacy is best summed up with his famous quote:

“My idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. Napoleon had that idea. He wanted to conquer the bloody world. I wanted Liverpool to be untouchable. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually everyone would have to submit and give in.”

Adored by a city and respected throughout the footballing world, the spirit of Shankly will always reverberate around Liverpool FC.
