One signing which appears to have captured the imagination of Asian Liverpool fans is that of Yan Dhanda from West Bromwich Albion.

On Friday, Liverpool created history by making the 14 year old the first Asian Liverpool player. Dhanda, who is of Indian descent, has attracted much attention since he won an Asian football talent competition in 2011. His recent rise has seen him called up to train with England’s under 16’s and he has his own sponsors, none other than Nike.

Dhanda who has been busy tweeting away in excitement since news first broke ‘OFFICIALLY A LIVERPOOL FC PLAYER!!!!!!!’ and he is not the only one caught up in the excitement. The Asian Kop team have all been buzzing since we heard the news!

So, we decided to catch up with some Asian Liverpool fans to find out what they made of this ground breaking story. Here is what some of the fans we spoke to had to say on Yan Dhanda becoming a Liverpool Player…

David ‘YNWA’ Mathura (England)

“The news that I’ve been waiting for since I was in school and now I’m 35 years of age, the first Asian Liverpool player! Brendan Rodgers a fantastic manager that works well with young players.”

BR Raheem Sterling

“That maybe thinking too far ahead as he’s only 14 years old but Liverpool do have one of the best Academy in Europe. Let’s hope he has all the skills and talents to break into the first team in the near future. YNWA.”

Asif Khan @Anfield_Talk (England)

“Only 14 but hopefully in time people will look back on this signing as being historic and the one that really enabled genuine Asian breakthrough into English football. For too many years there have been too many excuses as to why this has not happened – some justified and sadly some just playing upon stereotype. Here is wishing the kid all the very best – YNWA.”

Bud Klair (England)

“The exciting transfer news of Yan Dhanda joining The Mighty Reds has somewhat come as a surprise, mostly due to the rarity of a top flight club signing a football player of Asian descent. As a youngster, I took part in various tournaments and would always keep a look out for a potential scout at the touch lines. This hope was shared by thousands of fellow Asian hopefuls, I soon learnt that a glass ceiling existed and that it will be many years before the talent in the Asian community is recognised. I am not saying that the glass ceiling has been smashed now but with Dhanda’s transfer at least a crack has appeared. Hopefully Yan will be an inspiration to many fellow Asian players. Good luck Yan, I await the day you make your professional debut.”

Mal Singh (England)

“I think this is a huge signing in terms of an Indian footballer not only signing for the most decorated football club in English history but also the statement made by Liverpool Football Club. There has long been a prejudice in signing or giving Indian players a chance at the top level and this will hopefully pave the way for scouts not disregarding Indian players. Yan Dhanda is clearly excited by his recent tweets and you can see that he knows he’s been given a huge chance. For me personally, it connects me more to LFC knowing an Indian player will hopefully someday be pulling on the First Team shirt and breaking down further cultural barriers.”

Sunny Chauhan (England)

“After receiving a text message on hearing the news that an Indian player called Yan Dhanda had signed for LFC, I had to see the videos of him on YouTube as I had not previously hear about him. Having seen the videos, the boys a talented footballer! And it’s exciting to think that one day he will play in the First Team at Anfield representing all Indian LFC fans worldwide. Proud day for Indian LFC fans today. YNWA”

Pretash Gohil (England)

“Great news that LFC has signed an upcoming Asian talent. I hope he makes it all the  way and this opens the floodgates for a talented generation of Asian footballers!”

The Asian Kop

“Since we heard the news we have all been buzzing! Deepak has been wearing his LFC top all weekend, and with even more pride!! For him it was like another dimension had been added to the famous red shirt.”

“It really is a significant moment in football, an Asian player has just signed for one of the biggest clubs in the world – Liverpool. It has been a moment that we have been waiting for…Would it arrive? Wouldn’t it? That moment has arrived and what makes it even more sweeter is he’s signed for our club, YES LIVERPOOL FC!”

“He’s still a young kid but as David ‘YNWA’ Mathura mentioned, Brendan Rodgers is fantastic in dealing with young talent. And alongside the Liverpool Manager is the vastly experienced Mike Marsh who has nurtured the talent of Raheem Sterling  and many other Liverpool players in recent years. Yan could not be better placed for the next phase of his footballing journey.”

“It was a big statement that Liverpool made in signing Dhanda, this will certainly inject even more passion and  love for the club especially amongst it’s loyal Asian Fanbase. After gauging the reaction, it is just the beginning of the something special.”

“So, we will wait patiently in anticipation, as Yan develops and learns his trade at Liverpool. We will follow Yan’s journey and wait for as long as it takes for him to make his Liverpool debut. We just hope we are there for that historic moment, when the roof is raised for the first ever Asian Liverpool player to step onto the famous Anfield turf and grace the Fields of Anfield Road.”
