A true Liverpool Legend will play his final game today.  Jamie Carragher’s 737th appearance will be his last as he leads out the Redmen at Anfield for the final time. It will be a emotional day for supporters and the man himself, as he looks to call time on his long and illustrious career.

‘Mr Liverpool’ both on and off the pitch. His vocal presence can be heard on match day and his tireless work in Liverpool can been seen through his 23 Foundation which supports local kids in the area.

This week, Carra spoke of his regret at not winning a Premier League title. Although this one trophy eluded him, Carra will still signs off from the game having won a host of domestic and European honours:

European Cup (2005)

UEFA Cup (2001)

FA Cups (2001 and 2006)

League Cups (2001, 2003 and 2012)

And as Liverpool embark on a journey without Jamie Carragher, here is what some of his colleagues have had to say about the great man…

Steven Gerrard

 JC and SG

“Carra is unbelievable, and I am one of his biggest fans,”

“I have seen his attitude for more than a decade and I don’t believe he gets enough credit for it.

“What some people don’t appreciate with Carra is he puts his body on the line. Week in week out, he will push through the pain barrier for himself and the club.

“He’s breaking records right at the highest level of the game because of his attitude. He’s an absolute credit to himself.

Kenny Dalglish

“The fans hold him in such high esteem because they can relate to him.

“His leadership on the pitch has been so important to Liverpool Football Club.”

“He’s been an unbelievable servant for the club, both on and off the pitch. We can only be grateful for the wonderful service he has given to Liverpool.”

“We just have to be grateful that Liverpool has had a servant like Jamie. As a local boy it is always special and Jamie is a local boy who has never once got carried away with it all and who can relate to the supporters.”

Tommy Smith

“”We have got one hell of a hole to fill.  Not just in terms of the sheer footballing quality he offers us, but because of his leadership, passion and experience.”

“Jamie is simply irreplaceable.”

Robbie Fowler

“In his first few games, Jamie would be shouting at the older players – that tells you a little bit of his character as well.”

“He wasn’t afraid of anyone; if someone wasn’t doing a job, regardless of who you were – John Barnes, Ian Rush, myself or even a young kid now that’s coming into the side – you could guarantee that he would tell you what you were doing wrong.”

“An absolute legend of a player.”

Thierry Henry

“The memory that I have of him is someone who was loyal and committed. You will always remember him as a Liverpool player because that’s the only team he played for.”

“I have had incredible battles against him. I lost some and I won some but they were always fair and always hard. He’s a competitor.”

“For me, he will go down as one of the top five. If you talk about how long he has played for Liverpool and what he won there and what type of player he was, he will go down in history as one of the greatest in the history of the league.”

Ian Rush

“He’s a great basic defender who doesn’t do any fancy stuff. His commitment is second to none.”

“You don’t get many defenders idolised by Liverpool supporters but he is. He’ll throw his body in anywhere to stop the opposition and, if the ball needs to go into the stands, he’ll put it in the stands.”

“There’s just so many defenders in the Premier League who cannot defend. They have plenty of skill on the ball but they cannot defend.”

“Carragher’s one of the old-fashioned ones. You need a mixture of both. Don’t forget, he started out as a striker at Liverpool!”

“But the move from right back to central defence a few years ago was great for him. At centre back, he is fantastic. He’s one of the greatest defenders Liverpool have ever had.”

Gerrard Houllier

Houiller Carra

“He was an international player, probably not as glamorous as some others, but he was at least as efficient as them.”

“His worth ethic is fantastic and he is, as you know, a very loyal person – loyal to his friends, loyal to his family, loyal to the fans, loyal to the club, which is something that’s not very usual now.”

“He brought trophies to the club and he also brought heart. Carra is a true Liverpool warrior. I also like his generosity. I mean, not many people know how generous he can be. When he had his testimonial, he gave all of the money to charity.”

“For the community and for the fans, he is someone who is very open and very generous. And last but not least, there is his sense of humor, because when Carra is around there’s always a laugh and a joke. He has a great sense of humour – a Scouse sense of humour.”

Rafa Benitez

“Carra shows such character and that’s an example for the young kids. He’s very competitive, he’s always trying to win. This was a great message – especially to local players coming from the Academy.”

“He was important for the team and for me as a manager because he worked very hard in every training session. In six years we were in a lot of finals and situations where you had to show this character.”

“In Istanbul you now have all the images of him on the floor with cramp, and this is the type of character you are looking for from your players.”
