Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and captain Steven Gerrard led the Reds’ first team squad back to the famous Academy yesterday (Tuesday 26 February) to take part in an afternoon of activity with the next generation.

“I was very impressed with the young players. They were so hungry to learn and soak up everything we were showing and telling them. I joined the Academy when I was just nine years old and I can see myself in a lot of them. That same passion for the badge that doesn’t ever go away” commented Jamie Carragher.

Brendan Rodgers and Academy Director, Frank McParland also got involved and took part in a questions and answers session with the U18s and U21s, featuring players including Ryan McLaughlin and Jordan Ibe.

“Over the last nine months I’ve played a number of young players from the Academy. There is a huge amount of promise here, in the staff and players, and I want to ensure that we are working together as a team and that we are supporting the Academy as much as they support us” said Rodgers.

Frank McParland added: “The style of play at the Academy matches that of the first team. Fluid, touch and pass football. This matched with sessions such as these will go a long way in giving the youngsters a sense of connection with senior players, helping them make a seamless transition to the first team”.

The squad also spent time participating in skills sessions and mini football matches with players as young as eight years old right the way up to sixteen years old.

Goal keeper Pepe Reina said: “There is so much talent here and we as the first team have a duty to support and inspire these kids. I had a great time and I’ll be keeping a close eye on these players as I’m sure they’ll go on to amazing careers”.

Liverpool FC Academy has seen a number of world class players come through its ranks. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Phil Thompson and Ian Callaghan are just a few.
