Goodbye Maxi – A Tribute Compilation

Posted by

As Liverpool confirmed Brendan Rodgers first signing, a Kop favourite left on the same day.

Maxi Rodriguez, 31, who was signed from Atletico Madrid in January 2010, was leaving for his former club Newell’s Old Boys in his native Argentina. Maxi who enjoyed a some what of a renaissance at Anfield, scoring 17 goals in 73 appearance for the Redmen, thanked the fans in an open letter. Maxi spoke of leaving ‘…with a suitcase full of memories’ and of the huge honour when the Kop sang the ‘Maxi Rodriguez’ song.

Maxi Rodriguez Open Letter – via LFC TV

Dear Reds, I am leaving Liverpool FC today. Before signing for LFC, I just saw the club as one of the greatest institutions in football. After my time here I can confirm that this is not just a great club but also a great family. I have tried to give everything every day that I was wearing the LFC crest. It has been a great honour to defend this shirt during two and a half years. I am returning home with a suitcase full of great memories, good friends within the team and also within this great family that works every day in the club. Thanks a lot for your support. You can NOT imagine what a great honour it was for me when the Kop sang, ‘Maxi, Maxi Rodríguez runs down the wing for me da da da da dada…’

Hasta la vista. Maxi

‘Intelligent’ and ‘clinical’ were words that became synonymous with Rodriguez. His runs and clinical finishing saw him notch up two hat tricks in the 2010-11 season against Birmingham and Fulham. The hatrick against Fulham, had all the hallmarks of a number 9…sharpness, quality and sheer class! Standing in the Putney End and watching Maxi’s third goal fly past Mark Schwarzer, was one of those Kodak moments.   A player who had a knack of being in the right place at the right time, will be sorely missed.

The Asian Kop wishes you all the best.
