Greatest Liverpool Goal Scored Against Man Utd?

Posted by

There have been many great goals that have been scored against the old enemy; John Arne Riise’s rocket freekick, Steven Gerrard’s 30 yard screamer at Anfield, Fabio Aurelio’s majestic free kick in that 4-1 drubbing at Old Trafford. But which goal can lay claim to being the greatest goal scored against Man Utd?

The Asian Kop have scoured the archives to pick out one goal which possibly lays claim to the best goal scored against Man Utd.

This goal had hallmarks of a Diego Maradona / Messi run accompanied with a Pele style finish. Blink and you will miss it… still not sure? He is one of the greatest midfield players ever to grace the Anfield turf, he managed to score a hatrick of penalties in one game, he was the maestro behind the 1986 Fa Cup final success…he is none other than the great Liverpool Legend Jan Molby.

The goal that I am referring to, was scored by Jan during a 2-1 victory in the Milk Cup (League Cup) at Anfield in November 1985.  Jan began defending in his own half and then started chasing down the Man Utd players in an attempt to win back the ball. Norman Whiteside lost the ball to Jan and the rest as they say ‘is history’. Jan went on a trailblazing run through the Man United defence, before unleashing a ferocious shot from the edge of the box that found the back of the net – sending The Kop into mass ecstasy. Blink and you would have missed it! For the 41,291 who were lucky enough to witness the goal, they had been truly treated to one of the greatest goals of all time.

Coverage of football games is more expansive these days than it was in the 70’s and the 80’s. Most games are now live on TV with cameras covering every angle. When Jan went on his mesmerising run in 1985, there were no TV channels covering that game,  just a packed out Anfield crowd. The TV cameras were on a mass black out during that season.

For years, Jan’s superb goal remained a myth, something that was only talked about. But thankfully there was some footage of that goal and the only camera that captured Jan’s goal was police surveillance camera which was positioned in the Anfield gantry. In October 2009 nearly 25 years on from that November in 1985, that copy finally got a public viewing and all reds around the world finally got a chance to see that magical goal.

Maradona went on to a score a goal from his own half during the 1986 World Cup but our Jan started the trend back in 1985. Many players can only dream of scoring like this in their career, Jan managed this at the highest level and against Man Utd.

Not only was this one of the best goals scored against Man Utd, it quite simply was one of the greatest goals ever!

Judge for yourself, blink and you will miss it…

One of the finest midfielder to don the red shirt of Liverpool – Jan Molby we salute you! YNWA.
